Baptiste, a talented impersonator, can’t make a living from his art. One day, he is approached by Pierre Chozène, a famous but constantly disturbed by incessant calls from his publisher, his daughter, his ex-wife… Pierre, who needs peace and quiet to write his most ambitious text, suggests that Baptiste become his ‘answering machine’, pretending to be him on the phone… Little by little, Baptiste doesn’t just imitate the writer: he develops his own character!

Practise your comprehension the lazy way!
The screenings gather an international crowd in Lyon who wants to be in touch with contemporary French culture – all the films shown are currently on screens in France. It is also a way to practise comprehension as you hear people speak as they do in real life, slang and all, with the comfort of English subtitles. Your brain associates the two, you are thus working on your comprehension without even noticing it! And last but not least, you get to meet other students from the school or other expats before or after the movie. There is a café at the cinema so you can show up earlier for a drink!
Lost in Frenchlation: the concept
The concept was born out of the frustration experienced by Lost in Frenchlation’s Co-Founders, Matt and Manon, when they couldn’t go to the cinema together due to Matt’s lack of French language skills. There wasn’t a single cinema regularly screening French films with English subtitles, meaning that the international community – expatriates, international students and tourists – couldn’t access French cinema, one of the country’s greatest arts and an important part of French culture.
These days, thanks to Lost in Frenchlation, the international community can enjoy the same French films that the locals are watching, in the same beautiful and iconic cinemas. In Lyon, it is every last Thursday of the month at the cinema Comoedia!
